Backwaters has a diverse clientele looking for great food and a place to relax. The activity on the bay includes dolphin, fish, birds, and the occasional manatee lounging in the sun that keeps guests entertained and the conversation lively.
We decided in 2004 to add Maggie Mae’s Waterfront for a breakfast and lunch option just a few doors north on the same deck – with the same view! As demand grew, we had to add Maggie Mae’s on the Bluffs a few miles away.
Our constant attention to customer service and mouth-watering food leads to loyal guests and long-term employees. Our restaurant visitors and staff have become an extension of the Edger family.
2020 finds Backwaters going through difficult times, but still filling the needs of travelers and locals alike. Our warm welcome and great food provides some sense of normalcy to our guests. Join us soon!
How It Started
A message from the owners
Early one evening in 2000, Sondra and Larry Edger stood looking out over Clearwater Bay behind what is now Backwaters on Sand Key. The great view, relaxing deck and island atmosphere clinched the idea for a casual, but slightly fashionable seafood and steak restaurant. Little did we know that 20 years later the deck, view and island would still enchant restaurant goers from around the world and just across the street.
